What Square publishes

Square for Restaurants is free, $60 CAD a month for Plus, or custom pricing for Premium, which it only quotes above $250,000 a year in card sales (Square for Restaurants pricing, checked 29 October 2026). Plus includes one countertop terminal and unlimited kitchen display screens, with extra terminals at $40 a month. There is no setup fee and no long-term contract.

The number that decides it is the card rate: 2.5% in person and 2.8% plus 30¢ online on the restaurant plan (Square for Restaurants pricing, checked 29 October 2026). On a $40 online order that is about $1.42, and it is charged on every order whether it came through Square’s ordering or not.

The Quebec line matters

Square states on its own Canadian page that its products are not compatible with the online sales recording module or other mandatory billing requirements in Quebec, and that Square Loans are not available there (Square for Restaurants pricing, checked 29 October 2026). If you operate in Quebec, that is a real constraint and Square says so itself.

Chefzi is not certified for Quebec MEV/SRS either, so this is not a difference between the two: it is a limit both share, and you should plan for a certified till alongside either system if Quebec rules apply to you.

If you are comparing the two

  • Add up Square’s card fees on your real monthly card volume. At $35 a month Chefzi charges no commission, but card processing still costs whatever your own processor charges, so compare the processing rate as carefully as the subscription.
  • Price the hardware. On Square’s own page the iPad stand is $249, the register $399, the handheld $449 and a 21.5-inch kitchen display $899, and none of it is included, so a two-screen counter can cost more than a year of either subscription.
  • Ask Square what its ordering pages do in French, and whether your menu, prices and taxes are set per province.
  • If you are in Quebec, get the sales-recording answer in writing from both before you sign anything.

Where Chefzi is different

The price is published, in Canadian dollars, before you talk to anyone: $17 CAD a month for cash and pickup ordering, $35 CAD with card payments, per location, with no commission per order.

What Square sells separately, Chefzi includes in the fee: the ordering site, the POS, the kitchen display, order printing, reservations and loyalty are one system, and it runs on a tablet you already own instead of hardware that starts at $249. Menu setup and onboarding are free.
